From the airportto your neighbourhood

How long does it take to reach your hotel from Haneda or Narita, and on which lines? The times below are calculated by our routing engine to eight major districts of Tokyo.

Haneda (HND)

Haneda is the airport closest to the city centre. International flights mostly use Terminal 3; domestic flights use Terminals 1 and 2.

Two lines serve the terminals: the Tokyo Monorail, to Hamamatsuchō (change for the JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tōhoku lines), and the Keikyū line towards Shinagawa, with some trains continuing onto the Asakusa subway line (Shimbashi, Higashi-ginza, Asakusa).

Each time runs from the terminal station to the district’s main station, average waiting and transfers included. The “Route” link opens the detailed journey on the map.

Narita (NRT)

Narita lies about sixty kilometres from the centre, in Chiba Prefecture. Two families of trains link it to the city: the Keisei Skyliner (and Keisei Access Express trains) to Nippori and Keisei-Ueno, and JR’s Narita Express to Tokyo Station, with some trains continuing to Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku.

The airport itself is outside the area covered by our data, so we do not calculate the ride to Narita: check its duration and fares on the operators’ websites. Here, instead, are the calculated times from the two most common arrival stations.

From Nippori (Skyliner)

Nippori is the Skyliner’s first stop in Tokyo. You can change to the JR Yamanote line there without leaving the station.

Practical tips

  • One IC card for everything

IC cards (Suica, PASMO) work on the monorail, Keikyū, Keisei, JR and the subway. The Skyliner and the Narita Express also require a reserved-seat ticket.

  • Avoid the rush hour with luggage

Between 7:30 and 9:30 am on weekdays, trains into the centre are packed. If your flight lands early, a coffee at the airport can make the journey far more comfortable.

  • Arriving late

Our times describe the daytime (7 am to 8 pm). In the evening trains are less frequent, and the last ones leave shortly after midnight: check the last train if you land late.

  • Pick your hotel with the airport in mind

From Haneda, the southern and eastern districts (Shinagawa, Ginza, Tokyo Station) are quickest; from Narita, Ueno and Nippori. Compare with our “Where to stay” guide.
